On July 10th, 2015 the American Psychological Association (APA) has published the report of the independent review by attorney Mr Hoffman of accusations regarding the association’s involvement in abusive interrogations by the US Department of Defense. The independent review was ordered by APA to verify allegations made earlier in a report of the US Senate’s intelligence committee.
The conclusions of the report, published in a Press release by APA of July 11th, are highly disturbing as they confirm that officials of the organization, including Ethics Director Stephen Behnke, were involved in contacts with the Department of Defense and in shielding the US abusive interrogation program by changing APA’s rules of ethics through the 2005 PENS report.
EFPA is deeply shocked by the Mr Hoffman’s findings and strongly condemns the involvement of psychologists in torture or other degrading or inhuman treatment.
As former President Robert Roe has stated on Dec 22, 2014: “Interrogations are a NO-GO zone for psychologists”.
EFPA has asked its Board of Ethics and Task Force on Human Rights to study the report and make recommendations about what can do to prevent similar situations in Europe.
More information from APA can be found in the Press Release:
